Haidilao has launched 10 new menu items including the Mala Milk Broth with a creamy texture that makes the mala spiciness milder for those who can’t take the heat.

The Tobiko Chunky Prawn Paste, is an upgraded version of the fan-favourite prawn paste, now with chunkier prawn bits with the popping goodness of tobiko.

Beef lovers will probably want to try the Sichuan Pepperfect Beef Tongue and the Beef in Milk Bath.

There are two new drinks too, the Fizzy Strawberry Pop and Fizzy Sour Plum Pop.

My new favourite item from Haidilao is the Brown Sugar Lava Rice Cake dessert. It has a crisp outer shell with mochi chewiness and explodes with a brown sugar filling when you bite in.

Dakga, a new Korean barbecue restaurant in Singapo

Dakga, a new Korean barbecue restaurant in Singapore, offers a unique chicken-centric menu featuring various parts of the chicken, including a signature dish of chicken neck meat. Sides such as cheese fondue, kimchi pancake, and truffle triple eggs complement the barbeque experience. The restaurant also serves rice dishes, noodles, soups, and a range of drinks, including Soju and Korean beer.

I personally recommend the Curry Fried Chicken, Marinated Bone in Thigh and Cheese Fondue. 😋

As a launch promotion, customers who spend $50 or more on food orders receive free cheese fondue and nachos.

Meals at Si Chuan Dou Hua are full of comfort dish

Meals at Si Chuan Dou Hua are full of comfort dishes. Starting with their nourishing double-boiled soups, which I enjoy to the last drop, another favourite at the restaurant is their year-round lohei. Their “Prosperity Exotic Garden Greens with Black Truffle in Osmanthus Sauce” is a refreshing start to a meal with over 20 types of fruits and vegetables.

The Flambé Roast Suckling Pig is a signature with crisp crackling and can be made into two different dishes—Deep-fried Suckling Pig Fillet with Dried Chilli and Stewed Rice Vermicelli with Fillet of Suckling Pig.

“Chong Qing” Diced Chicken with Dried Chilli always tests my spice tolerance, but the flavour is too addictive to stop munching on the crunchy chicken. The Boiled Sliced Fish with Spicy Chilli Sauce is also something that I’d order… maybe with some rice.

The restaurant makes its own Purple Rice Beancurd that’s served as a cold dessert with ice cream, and the beancurd also features in the savoury Signature Beancurd Medley—three types of beancurd (soy, fried purple rice and tauhuay) done three ways (steamed, fried, and braised).

An interesting dessert is the Giant Glutinous Sesame Ball. I never knew this was a trend, but deep frying the bulbous, air-filled sesame ball takes much skill. I love most things glutinous, so this sweet, nutty, chewy snack suits me, although it’s a little heavy for dessert. But if you have a tableful of people to impress, the balloon-like structure will surely start conversations.

If you love mentaiko, you will want to visit Kanada-ya as they have four new sides. Their Mentaiko Series, serves up generous amounts of mentaiko on Karaage, Gyoza, Fries and Takoyaki.

If that’s not exciting enough, take part in the Kanada-ya Takoyaki Roulette Challenge. If you want to participate, simply express your interest, then snap a photo, and tag #kanadayasg on social media. you will be presented with a free plate of Takoyaki, one or which will be filled with wasabi. I’ll never get bored of attending coffee classes as there’s always some new information to learn and it’s even better when we get hands on experience with the commercial machines. 🤓

We went for a Valentine’s couple class as friends (cos who has time to date anyways 😅), and learnt about coffee—from beans, to processing, flavour profiles and then hands on with filter and espresso making.

Baker X at Orchard Central—appears to be just another small cafe on the outside, but within, it allows home bakers to take up residency to hone their craft and provides a vital insight into running a retail front.

Visit throughout the year to find different home bakers taking over the space, one at a time. It was inspiring to chat to the bakers personally to find out more about their passions and to hear how invested they are to perfect their products.

🤓: Popular for their artisanal tarts, I enjoyed the Lemon Yuzu Meringue and Yamaimo (orh nee) flavours the most. All the tarts are flavourful without tasting overly sweet. The presentation of the tarts are highly insta-worthy too. 📸

🤓: Focuses on thin-crust egg tarts in various flavours. The Coffee flavour was intense, while I also enjoyed their Orh Nee and Pandan tarts. These tarts are well presented and would make great gifts or tea time snacks in the office.

The Butcher’s Build menu consists of Butcher’s Sandwich, Chorizo Slut, and Butcher’s Salad. As with all Eggslut sandwiches, you can customise it the way you like—I customised mine with additional avocado and bacon. 😋

Au Balcon, translated as ‘on the balcony’ is t

Au Balcon, translated as ‘on the balcony’ is the updated space at The Summerhouse. Overlooking the gardens, the space is tranquil and classic French fare is on the menu.

We were lucky to try a number of dishes from the new dinner menu with my favourites being the Seared Atlantic Scallops, Florentine 65° Organic Egg, Pluma Iberico and Citrus Creme Brûlée.

All the other dishes we tried tasted great too. The flavours are well balanced and plating is immaculate.

There’s also refreshing cocktails on the menu and if you’re not into alcohol, there’s mocktails, juices and pretty good coffee!

Probably the best tasting so far this year as the setting, ambience and food, all exceeded expectations. And although we tried to say “no expectations”, mine were pretty high as the restaurant is a bit out of the way. All I can say is that it’s worth the trip to The Summerhouse for a meal. I would go back for another meal.
