New restaurant/bar Spectre!

Recently enjoyed an evening at newly launched Spectre. 🍸 The place has this vintage apothecary vibe, something unique, and they’ve got this incredible approach to food and drink that’s centred around mental wellness. The cocktail menu? It encourages you to choose your tipple based on aroma, and they have no and low alcohol options infused with adaptogens and mood boosters. 🌿

The food takes comfort classics and gives them a unique Southeast Asian twist. Definitely a place for those looking to connect, unwind, and explore a new way of dining. Can't wait to go back! 🥂

📍 Oriental Kopi - Johor Bahru

Stopped by for lunch during a work trip to JB, apparently this place is highly recommended and I can see why.

🍽️ What’s popular:
- Thickest Egg Tart: Recorded in Malaysia’s Book of Records, this egg tart is a must-try for its rich and creamy filling. I definitely like the volume of the filling and it’s not too sweet. I liked the crust cos it’s like puff pastry and was nice and crisp.
- Nanyang Coffee & Tea: Made with high-quality Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica coffee beans, the coffee at Oriental Kopi is known for its nice aroma and rich taste. I tried the milk tea with grass jelly and it has well balanced flavour of tea and sweetness.
- Toasts & Malaysian Delights: From traditional Chinese delicacies to Nyonya delights and Malay specialties, Oriental Kopi seems to have a wide range of dishes for everyone.

🌆 The Atmosphere:
- Clean and spacious.
- Service was pretty good.
- Suits Singaporeans. 🫢 There were a number of Singaporeans when we visited and our local contact said that he doesn’t dine here much because there’s more local options down the street. 😅

I would definitely eat here again. The food was good and they don’t hold back on the butter portions. 😋

Food Photography Tip #001: Use natural light whenever possible. Avoid harsh direct sunlight to prevent overexposed shots.

For natural lighting I tend to prefer early morning right or late afternoon lighting that is shining from an angle. I always try to avoid direct lighting at midday because it can sometimes cause overexposure and very harsh shadows.

Natural lighting is great when it’s not too overcast or too bright. However, most of you probably also know that I do like my LED lights and flash for lighting, depending on circumstance. There is no definite right or wrong, just depends on your preference and style.

Sometimes the best meals are the simple ones with friends… friends who still allow me to be embarrassing by using my camera and light at the restaurant. 😅

A lot of times these days, restaurants don’t leave a good impression even for media tastings where the setting has already been prepped for them to get the food and service right. So when we went to @jelebudrylaksa and the staff were courteous from the moment we stepped in, even before I took our my camera, I was super impressed.

Many times at media events, with our bags after work and camera gear, we have bigger bags and have to leave our bags on the floor or hold them uncomfortably through the photo taking and meal because there’s just no space. But when we stepped in to Jelebu even with its space being quite limited, the staff automatically joined 2 tables and told me to put my bag on the chair they pulled closer. And I noticed they did the same thing for another pair of guests that came in after us. They didn’t try to reserve the tables for other possible walk-ins. They made us comfortable from the start. I’m sure if they needed the table back later on they could always ask. But that little gesture impressed me. A lot of other restaurants, even posh ones, would just ignore the fact that you have to put your handbag on the floor. But it’s so unhygienic… imagine bottom of bag on floor then onto your lap or onto the table.

Back to the good… the staff were just friendly and courteous the whole time we were there.

It’s not the first time I tried the dry laksa. The first time was a not so great experience because I was alone at a media event for an outdoor food fest. I struggled attempting to carry my gear, order, collect and hold all my food then find a table amongst the crowd. Plus the vendors weren’t fully prepared for the first day… so the dry laksa wasn’t very memorable.

So I decided to give the dry laksa another go… but I still feel that it doesn’t stand out much as a signature dish. On the flip side, the side dishes were fantastic and I want to go back to try more.

I feel like, when I have space and time for myself, I'm more creative. When I'm stressed, I'm stifled. Need to learn not to let work overtake my life. And it's one of those things, and why I left graphic design. Cos when I need to be creative at work, I don't feel like creating outside of work, then I start to hate work and it's a vicious cycle.

Did I miss the news flash? I was looking for dinner tonight on @grabfoodsg, and I noticed that @shihlinsnackssg now has crispy chicken skin on the menu. Is it new? Has it always been there? So many questions.

I ordered the version with fragrant powder only. There’s another version with cheese curry, but since I’m not a fan of McDonald’s curry sauce (yes, Macs Curry haters do exist), I gave the curry a miss. Someone try it and let me know how it tastes.

Overall, the chicken skin was super crispy, and the flavouring was delightful at the start. By the end of the packet, I felt a bit sick, and the saltiness was getting to me. My mouth has been feeling slightly dry all evening after eating the snack. 🫢 But it's still yummy and a good deal. Maybe have it with the mee sua. I think I saw a set.

Simple home-made #glutenfree pizza. Think I need try to be more disciplined about my gluten intolerance. Did you know that a lot of people are self diagnosed? Go get a blood test, it's not a trend to be gluten intolerant. I mean, why would you voluntarily give up bread and noodles?! щ(ﾟДﾟщ)(屮ﾟДﾟ)屮 😂

Also if you're gluten intolerant or allergic then deal with it and adapt your diet. Don't go around whinging at every meal that you can't eat this and that. It's unnecessary and annoying for others. You either choose to eat something or you don't.

Some facts about gluten intolerance and gluten allergies…

1. Gluten intolerance and gluten allergy are different: gluten intolerance, or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, causes discomfort after eating gluten. Symptoms can take hours, even days to appear, making it harder to identify the trigger foods.

2. Symptoms of gluten intolerance aren't just physical, they can also affect your mental health. Alongside bloating and headaches, mood swings and depression are also common, highlighting the condition's widespread impact.

3. In contrast, a gluten allergy, or wheat allergy, is an immediate immune system response. It can cause symptoms like itching, swelling of the mouth or throat, hives, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis, usually within minutes to a few hours of ingesting gluten.

Proactive procrastination. 😂 I have so many things to post, but instead, let me post this highly irrelevant reel of my lunch. Home-cooked kuay chap.

Yup, instant kuay chap with crab meat stick. Goodness. 😅

Also, been using this bowl I made. Realizing it's the perfect single serving size. And it fits nicely in my hand. This is made with ceramic and stone clay, with a "marbled" effect. Will try to make more because it's growing on me, however the next ones will probably have a satin or matte finish instead, cos glossy things just freak me out. Pre-order or watch out for more ceramics at → @thefussysprout. 😂 Fulfil my dreams of being a non-broke artist. 🤣
